Audi A3 Sportback G-Tron

The Audi A3 Sportback G-Tron is probably the most revolutionary model of the Audi`s low-emission lineup. The G-Tron car will be powered by a e-gas technology based on carbon-natural compressed natural gas. The e-gas plant uses electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Audi A3 Sportback G-Tron

The A3 G-Tron is fitted with a pair of tanks under the rear cargo floor holding 15.43 pounds of CNG, which can power the car for almost 250 miles. The conventional gasoline tank gives the car an addition 560 miles of range. In total the Audi A3 Sportback G-Tron has a driving range of more than 800 miles (1300 km).

The new Audi A3 Sportback g-tron

-The new A3 Sportback g-tron is powered by the CO2-neutral Audi e-gas
-CO2 emissions of 30 grams per kilometer (48.28 g/mile)
-Total range of 1300 km (807.78 miles)

Audi is taking a large step towards sustainable mobility with the A3 Sportback g-tron. The compact five-door car, due to make its debut at the end of the year, is powered by the CO2-neutral fuel Audi e-gas. The fuel will be produced in the power-to-gas plant in Werlte, Germany. This new car innovatively combines ecological balance, economy and high-tech solutions.

The Audi A3 Sportback g-tron comes with the full gamut of Audi’s technology expertise – from ultra-lightweight technology, and infotainment, to driver assistance systems. But first and foremost it showcases state-of-the-art CNG drive technology, starting with the fuel storage. Its two tanks under the luggage compartment floor can each hold seven kilograms (15.43 lb) of CNG at a maximum 200 bar pressure. In tune with the ultra-lightweight construction concept, each tank weighs 27 kilograms (59.52 lb) less than its conventional counterpart.

The tanks consist of a new type of matrix. The inner layer consists of gas-impermeable polyamide polymer, while a second layer of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) gives the tank its extremely high strength; a third layer of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) provides rugged protection against damage from the outside. High-strength epoxy resin is used to bind the fiber reinforced materials.

A second highlight of the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron is its electronic gas pressure regulator. This compact and lightweight component reduces the high pressure of the gas flowing from the cylinders down to around five to nine bar in two stages.

It ensures that the right pressure is always present in the gas rail and at the injector valves – low pressure for efficient driving in the lower speed range, and higher when the driver calls for more power and torque.

If the pressure in the tank drops below ten bar, the engine management system automatically switches over to gasoline operation. The Audi A3 Sportback g-tron is fully bivalent, i.e. its performance figures are identical in CNG and gasoline modes.

CNG provides a range – based on standard fuel consumption – of around 400 km (248.55 miles), with gasoline providing another 900 km (559.23 miles) if necessary; the total range is approximately on a par with an Audi TDI. Two displays in the instrument cluster provide the driver with up-to-date information on the fuel level in each of the tanks. The driver information system also displays the current fuel consumption based on the particular operating mode.

The two filler necks are placed under a common fuel flap. After refueling, and whenever it is very cold, the engine is started with gasoline initially, then it is switched over to natural gas as quickly as possible.

The engine is based on the new 1.4 TFSI. Key modifications relate to the cylinder head, turbocharging, injection system, and the catalytic converter. Developing 81 kW (110 hp) and 200 Nm of torque, the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron has a top speed of 190 km/h (118.06 mph), with 0 to 100 km/h (0 – 62.14 mph) taking eleven seconds. The five-door car consumes on average less than 3.5 kilograms per 100 km of CNG or Audi e-gas – the fuel that is generated from eco-electricity in the Audi e-gas project. CO2 tailpipe emissions are less than 95 grams per km (152.89 g/mile) in gas mode.

The greenhouse gas balance is even more attractive in a well-to-wheel analysis that accounts for all factors from the fuel source to the car’s wheels. When the A3 Sportback g-tron is powered by Audi e-gas, no more CO2 is released than was chemically input in its production beforehand – creating a closed loop. When the energy required to build the e-gas facility and wind power generators is included in a comprehensive analysis, CO2 emissions are still less than 30 grams per km (48.28 g/mile).

Buyers of the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron will presumably obtain the e-gas at the public CNG refueling stations via an ecological accounting¬ method, similar to the method currently in existence for obtaining eco-electricity.

With the e-gas project, Audi is the first automobile manufacturer to develop an entire chain of sustainable energy carriers. The start of the chain has electricity produced from renewable energy sources; the end products are hydrogen and the synthetic Audi e-gas. Construction of the world’s first industrial plant to produce synthetic methane (e-gas) from CO2 and renewable electricity is almost complete in Werlte (Emsland district of Lower Saxony), Germany.

The Audi e-gas plant uses the renewable electricity in the first stage for electrolysis – splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen (Audi e-hydrogen), which could one day power fuel-cell vehicles. Because there is not yet a widespread hydrogen infrastructure, however, the hydrogen is then reacted with CO2 in a methanation plant to produce renewable synthetic methane, or Audi e-gas. Chemically speaking, this e-gas is identical to fossil-based natural gas. As such, it can be distributed to CNG stations via the natural-gas network.

Thanks to the power-to-gas process, the electricity grid and gas network are being linked bidirectionally for the first time. Until now while you could generate electricity from gas, the reverse was not possible. The Audi e-gas plant therefore paves the way for tapping into the natural-gas network with its huge capacity as a storage and transport system for hitherto excess electricity capacity.

The CO2 used in Audi’s e-gas plant is a waste ¬product from a nearby biogas plant, operated by power utility EWE. The CO2, which would otherwise pollute the atmosphere, is chemically bonded into the fuel at the Audi e-gas plant. The e-gas plant will annually produce about 1,000 metric tons of e-gas and will chemically bind some 2,800 metric tons of CO2. This corresponds roughly to the amount of CO2 that 224,000 beech trees absorb in a year.

The CO2-neutral e-gas from Werlte will power 1,500 new Audi A3 Sportback g-tron vehicles 15,000 kilometers (9,320.57 miles) every year. The power industry can also benefit from Audi’s e-gas project, as it addresses the nagging challenge of how to store large quantities of renewable electricity produced from wind turbines and photovoltaic systems efficiently and irrespective of location. The electricity-gas cogeneration technology could significantly foster the expansion of renewable energies.

Intoxicating RS 5 driving experience is amplified by new open-top variant

Audi range expands yet again to include potent new V8 convertible
One of the stars of this month’s Paris Motor Show (Sep 29 to Oct 14 2012)
4.2 FSI engine with 450PS, zero to 62mph in 4.9 seconds, 25.9mpg
Elegant and spacious body with lightweight cloth soft top

As the UK basks in Indian summer sunshine Audi has just very appropriately removed the wraps from its most exhilarating RS convertible to date – the new 450PS RS 5 Cabriolet. Complementing the beauty and brawn of the RS 5 silhouette with a fast-acting lightweight fabric roof the new open-top will arguably offer the very best environment in which to savour the red-blooded 4.2-litre V8 shared with the RS 4 Avant. The new RS 5 Cabriolet opens for UK ordering in late 2012, and deliveries are expected to begin here next spring.

The lightweight ‘acoustic hood’ of the RS 5 Cabriolet offers a degree of sound absorption that runs its fixed head counterpart remarkably close, and at the press of a button opens and closes fully automatically in 15 seconds and 17 seconds respectively – even when driving at speeds of up to 31mph.

When open, it hardly affects the size of the spacious luggage compartment – it only requires 60 litres of its 380-litre total volume. The split rear seatbacks can be folded down individually, and a through-load facility from the boot to the rear seating area maximises versatility. Special reinforcements contribute to the convertible body’s high rigidity, and aluminium front wings compensate for some of the added weight of the reinforcements.

Not surprisingly the body benefits from the same subtle revisions that brought the RS 5 Coupe into line with new generation A5 models earlier this year. Styling updates include a slight revision to the single frame grille design, sharper and more pronounced bonnet contours, new ‘solid band’ wraparound LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights, new look front and rear bumpers and 19-inch wheels in a new ’10-spoke’ design. In the Cabriolet, a subtle matt carbon fixed spoiler lip on the boot lid boosts downforce – this can be body-coloured if required.

Inside, the cabin also features the latest RS 5 detail enhancements, including a new flat-bottomed RS three-spoke steering wheel, along with the new generation Coupe’s equipment upgrade, which brings Bluetooth mobile phone preparation, cruise control, satellite navigation and Audi Music Interface iPod connection to the already lengthy standard equipment list.

Head-level heating

Cabriolet-specific standard features include automatic front seatbelt feeders, a wind deflector, the lighting package including LED interior lights and a rollover protection system incorporating aluminium plates which deploy upwards behind the rear head restraints. Key options include three-stage head-level heating and front seat heating for top-down comfort on slightly cooler days.

All assistance systems offered in the A5 model line-up are available as options in the RS 5 Cabriolet as well, including adaptive cruise control which is capable of initiating full brake application in an emergency situation, Audi side assist blind spot monitoring and the Audi active lane assist lane departure warning system. The standard parking system plus with front and rear sensors can also be extended to include a reversing camera.

In the multimedia field, the headline news is the Mobile Phone Preparation – High with Audi connect option, which lets passengers surf the web with their mobile devices via an integrated WLAN hotspot and also offers everything from Audi traffic information online to navigation with Google Earth images and Street View.

High-revving V8 power

As in the Coupe, the high-revving, naturally-aspirated 4.2-litre V8 that is hand built for the RS 5 delivers 450PS at 8,250 rpm and peak torque of 430 Nm at between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. It powers the Cabriolet from rest to 62mph in 4.9 seconds, and where possible can take it to an electronically-limited 155mph top speed, which at extra cost can be elevated to 174mph if desired. Thanks to a combination of technologies from the Audi modular efficiency platform, including a recuperation system, the high-tech V8 can also deliver real world fuel economy, with up to 25.9mpg possible according to the combined cycle test.

New electromechanical power steering which demands no input from the alternator while in the ‘straight-ahead’ position works in favour of efficiency, as does the familiar seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission with its long top gear, lightning-fast shifts and steering wheel paddle control.

Permanent quattro all-wheel-drive smoothes out power delivery, and is backed up here by torque vectoring, the crown-gear centre differential and the rear sport differential for even more stringent protection against traction losses and split-second allocation of torque between the front and rear axles and the rear wheels. Up to 70 per cent can flow to the front or as much as 85 per cent to the rear, as necessary. The default 40:60 ratio of the rear-biased configuration ensures sporty handling.

RS chassis modifications

The body is 20 mm lower than that of the Audi A5 Cabriolet; its mounts are stiffer, and its anti-roll bars are larger and firmer. Five-link front and self-tracking trapezoidal-link rear suspension with very high lightweight aluminium content imparts great agility, and large, internally-ventilated wave brake discs with eight-piston callipers instil complete confidence.

Carbon fibre-ceramic brake discs are also available at extra cost, as is the Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) system, which uses diagonally opposed pairs of shock absorbers linked by hydraulic lines and a central valve. During fast cornering, the system intensifies the stabilisation of the front outside wheel for optimum stability and composure. Its response can be varied across three settings at the touch of a button.

A dynamic steering option is also available for integration into the standard Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system, enabling the actual ratio of the steering to be varied according to the four Audi drive select settings comfort, auto, dynamic and individual. When the dynamic steering option isn’t specified, the system can apply these same four settings to the steering weighting, along with the S tronic transmission’s shift points and the throttle’s response. It can also modulate the distinctive, bass-heavy sound of the exhaust system. A sports exhaust system, identifiable by its black-coloured tailpipes, can be specified at extra cost to deliver even richer sound.

Customer deliveries of the Audi RS 5 Cabriolet will begin in early 2013 in Germany, where its base price will be 88,500 euros (£70,154 as at 6.9.12). UK-specific pricing has yet to be confirmed and will be announced nearer to the start of customer ordering later this year.

Official information
Audi Q3 Jinlong Yufeng

At Auto China 2012 in Beijing, Audi is presenting two themed vehicles based on the Q3 – the Q3 jinlong yufeng and the RS Q3 concept. Both cars interpret the character of the compact SUV, which will launch on the Chinese market this year, in a very special way – the one is recreationally oriented and rugged while the other was systematically designed for dynamic performance.

2012 is the Chinese year of the dragon. Jinlong yufeng means “Golden Dragon in the Wind.” In this way, jinlong yufeng fits in with the character of the themed vehicle. It follows the Detroit showcar and the RS Q3 concept as another variant of the compact Audi Q3 SUV and is based on the trendy and fast-moving sport of kitesurfing, in which the objective is to fearlessly control the power of the wind.

Mounted to the roof of the Audi Q3 jinlong yufeng are two kiteboards made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). The designers developed a flat outdoor pouch as a special cargo floor liner. It not only provides protection against dirt, but can also be used to stow wet beach articles or can even be used as a sun umbrella or a seat cover. The kite itself can be stowed in a kite pouch, which was also specially designed for this themed vehicle. Two rugged and compact fun sport cameras known as “Audi Cams” are stored in the left side wall of the cargo space.

Kite surfers can mount the Audi Cams to the sail bar, their equipment or a helmet with an elastic band. The images are transmitted to the car via a strong WLAN router connection. From there, they can be sent with Bluetooth car phone online to any receiver via UMTS – a new unconventional idea within the range of features of Audi connect.

Zest for life and energy: the exterior
The Audi Q3 jinlong yufeng is an off-road vehicle for young, active sports enthusiasts. Its paint finish is Liuli Yellow, a luminous monochrome color that expresses a zest for life and high energy. The body add-on parts, many of which match those of the off-road package for production cars, are painted in matt quartz; this paint, built up from different gray pigments, has a natural look and is slightly rough to the touch. The high-gloss package adds small highlights around the windows.

Vertical aluminum struts in the single-frame radiator grille extend over its full height; they form a wave shape in the area where the logo appears on the production cars. The struts match the two-tone color scheme of the Audi Q3 jinlong yufeng: their sides are painted in a quartz color, while their front edges have a high-gloss finish. Certain areas inside the xenon plus headlights are tinted in anthracite, and aluminum panels cover the upper sections of the air intakes. The underbody guard protecting the engine is made of aluminum.

Flared wheel arches and brushed stainless steel running boards are prominent features on the sides of the Audi Q3 jinlong yufeng; these items will soon be added to the Q3 accessories program. The front cross-bar of the aluminum roof rail integrates small LED spotlights for illuminating the area around the car. The two flush tailpipes of the dual-branch exhaust system are integrated in the diffuser, which is partly made of aluminum – as is the rear underbody guard.

Yellow as contrasting color: the interior
Three colors dominate inside the themed vehicle, – black, gray and yellow. The roofliner consists of titanium gray Alcantara; many of the interior surfaces are black in color. The instrument panel is upholstered in black Fine Nappa leather and is decorated with yellow contrasting seams.

Fine aluminum accents glisten in the instrument cluster; cross-ribs and small fins give the dials and pointers a sculpted look. The leather-trimmed steering wheel has contrasting yellow seams, and behind it there are two large shift paddles for control of the seven-speed S tronic. The sturdy foot rests and pedal set are made of stainless steel with rubber caps.

The seats are upholstered in woven leather – narrow strips of leather just a few tenths of a millimeter wide are interwoven with yarn. The material is accentuated by yellow piping and contrasting seams. The side panels of the seat cushions and seatbacks are bright in yellow Velvet leather – a material whose look is similar to that of nubuck leather, but with a finer grain. Yellow Velvet leather is also integrated in parts of the door trim panels.

Stainless steel mesh is used for decorative inlays. Other decorative panels in high-gloss black appear all around the instruments and in large areas of the center console and tunnel; display elements and controls appear to hover in front of them. The gear selection lever has an aluminum plate with the “Q3” signature, and yellow seams decorate its shift boot.
